Here is a fuel filter you may not know about! It is designed with a clear fuel-rated nylon shell, with a large version of the same type fine-mesh filter as used in the Mikuni carburetors. The element is about four times as large as the Mikuni element. These filters are light, sleek, good looking and small, making them easy to place in the fuel line anywhere. They can be cleaned by back flushing. While these do not provide the large surface area like an OEM (which means you can forget about for a long time), they are ideal for the performance-oriented tuner/rider that wants to see what's inside and performs routine maintenance.
